The Barn Owls had a busy week this week. They looked at science through art and then went outside and made their own Andy Goldsworthy art using what they could find outside. They are very effective!

This week Snowy Owls made some sandwiches for Mr Grinning the lighthouse keeper. He wanted a healthy sandwich to eat while he was at work. We practised first and then had a go with our choice of filling. We also taste tested them!
We could not have been prouder of the Eagle Owl children this week – they took part in our annual Bake-Off competition. Pupils can work on their own or in a pair and then decide if they want to make sweet or savoury. They they research everything from the oven temperature needed to how long it will need and what ingredients to get. The whole operation is headed by our wonderful TAs Mrs Awbery and Mrs Graves, who collect all the timings to see which group’s food could go in the oven at the same time, and who will need something alternative. Considering we only have 2 ovens in our tiny kitchen, to create over 20 different dishes in a morning is incredibly impressive and done with military precision!! We could not do this without Mrs Bushell who is the expert at teaching them, and also without the support of parents who have supplied the ingredients for this competition.
This year it was judged by one of our Governors, our school secretary and Mrs Hamilton, who was making a (lucky) surprise visit to say hello. They were banned from the hall and so the judging was done completely on TASTE, PRESENTATION and TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY.
What a range we had! From Fish and Chips and Burgers, to Sushi and Curry with home made flatbread among others; in the sweet category we had a Dessert Pizza, Brookies (cookies and brownies combined!), Nana’s Apple Pie and wonderful cupcakes – again among others! I hope you agree – this is indeed a fantastic opportunity to be creative with cooking and also to see how independent our children can be. It really was wonderful – well done to EVERYONE involved. It was so hard to pick winners and so there were several in each place!!
Winning Dish: Strawberry Shortcake – Thea
Equal Second place went to Lily and Indi with their light and fluffy Victoria Sponge Cake and to Josh for his Sushi.
Third place went to Sophie and Benji for some delicious Chocolate Mousse and biscuits.
Equal Fourth place went to Seth for his French Apple Tart and to William and Seb for their Burger and Chips.
Equal fifth place was awarded to Stanley and Sam for Nana’s Apple Pie, and to Josef for his Fish and Chips.
What a day!! Well done to everyone. Prizes ranged from Bake-Off merchandise (donating money to Stand Up to Cancer) and delicious cook books, so winners all round.
Barn Owls had a busy week this week! They have been studying Earthquakes and Volcanoes and in groups have created a papier-mache volcano which this week they took onto the playground and watched erupt! It was spectacular!
They have also been learning about fables and this week they wrote their own for a class book. They are very professional! Here are some examples:
In RE the Barn Owls have been learning about Islam and they have created their own models to show what you would find inside a mosque:
The Year 1 pupils were busy this week with more practical maths. they have been working with numbers up to 100. Pupils created giant number lines then explored partitioning tens and ones.
Owlets had a busy week studying and handling (very carefully) the ducklings. The class were able to observe them closely and even watched them take to water – how lovely. They grew at a mighty rate, and were too big for the initial cage by Thursday, so we had to say goodbye to them. What excellent learning they have got from that lovely project. They have also released their butterflies this week and let the fly free for the summer. A lovely week for them all.
We seemed to have less time this year to put together our dance for the Dance Show. However the Eagle Owls, as always, put their all into the rehearsals and completed a fab dance for the day. We tried to encourage Eurovision-type outfits, fun and bright, and even had a Year 6 wear a blue wig backwards on his face – very Eurovision!! It was a great day and we want to say well done to them all. To perform on stage to an audience of more than 300 is rather nerve wracking and they did splendidly.
Photos are available to buy via the SSP website of the performance. Here is a sample of the proofs.
We celebrated National Sports Week this week by having physically active lessons around school that were not just PE lessons. However we do of course continue to enjoy two hours of PE each week and our Coach Martin is currently teaching Cricket skills to KS2.
It has been National Sports Week this week and as a physically active school we have made extra effort to make sure that we continue to include lessons in the whole curriculum that get the children up and about! Here we have Year 1 finding quarters of amounts outside and the Year 2’s working out how long a minute is by doing tasks that they had to stop at exactly a minute in! They were also completing investigative science using shadows.
